Happy Birthday McLane Children’s!

Today marks the 7th birthday of McLane Children’s Medical Center!  7 years ago we opened the doors to Central Texas’ first and only freestanding dedicated children’s medical center!

Thanks to each and every person who makes MCMC what it is today and in the future!

Since we opened:

As a Medical Center, we have accomplished so much in these first 7 years with your help, including but not limited to:

  • Member Children’s Hospital Association
  • Designated and verified Level II PEDIATRIC Trauma Center
  • Ground and air transport team
  • Merged to become Baylor Scott & White
  • Implemented Epic
  • Clinics designated as Patient Centered Medical Homes
  • Designated Silver level ESLO Pediatric & Neonatal ECMO program
  • Texas only Gold Level Safe Sleep organization
  • CAP accredited laboratory
  • Designated Pathway to Excellence organization
  • Application accepted for Magnet designation
  • 80% RN staff hold BSN’s, exceeding IHI target of 80% all RN’s nationally to hold BSN’s by 2020
  • 48% eligible RN’s hold specialty certifications
  • 1 of 20 Level IV NICU’s in Texas, only Level IV NICU at BSWH
  • Designated Safe Place for children
  • Women’s Choice Award as a Best Children’s Hospital
  • 1st pediatric dialysis center
  • 1st pediatric sleep program
  • Zero CAUTI in MSU in almost 7 years!

Our challenges are great:

  • 1 of 11 children in U.S. live in Texas (6.9M)
  • Second highest birth rate in U.S.
  • 1.6 M children in Texas live in households below poverty level (25%)
  • 18% Texas children live in high-poverty areas compared to 14% nationally
  • 47th / 50 states for rate of uninsured children in U.S. (10%)
  • 2008, legacy S&W served:
    • 57% of children stayed in our community
    • 43% traveled elsewhere
  • We serve 30,000 sq. miles = New England!
